Backyard Breeders.... The Truth

So I recently went on the site www.craigslist.com to inquire about a puppy I wanted to purchase for my family. While doing so, I came across several ads for  Pit-Bull pups,Yorkies, Great Danes - you name it, I saw it. Also along with these ads (some of which wanted $400 for a re-homing fee- lol) were also people who were protesting Backyard Breeding. At first I ignored the post ranting and raving about this term but then it started to catch my attention. 

What is a Backyard Breeder (BYB) and/or Puppy Mill? 

And What's so Bad about a person Selling their puppies?

After a few hours of research I was able to pinpoint why people were so mad about backyard breeding and the affects that it has on the animal world. BYB's and Puppy Mills have the primary goal to sell animals in order to make a profit, despite the livelihood of the breed and/or the high chance that the puppy may end up at a Humane Society, in the hands of another BYB, and etc. Puppy Mills  are commercial breeding facilities that produce mass-quantities of animals for the reason of profit.

 

Puppies who are derived from BYB and Puppy Mills tend to be bred despite health faults and problems within the breed. Theses businesses are only looking for a quick dollar so they use craigslist, newspapers, and other free forums as a means of advertising. They do NOTHING to prove their dogs have good temperament and are fit to be in the home with family. BYB's also tend to cross-mate dogs in similar characteristics with the hopes of making up breeds. All of these things may not seem that damaging but lets look at the facts:

98% of Dogs found in a pet store are from a Puppy Mill

Puppy Mills and BYBs flood the market with animals, hence reducing the amount of homes for pets from reputable establishments, shelters, and rescue groups.

Pets from Puppy Mills are known to suffer from malnutrition or starvation due to unsanitary food and water.

Pets tend to lack professional health care besides the regular shots or physical appearance

Puppies tend be sole at an age less than 6 weeks s and animals from BYBs typically are not tested for genetic disease and are not adequately protected from illnesses such as parvo, as documented in news reports and in Animal Court cases. 

Puppy Mills and BYBs have no intentions of socializing their animals which can lead to bigger problems as the animal grows up.


Unsound breeding practices can predispose dogs to hereditary afflictions like hip dysplasia, dislocating kneecaps, eye problems, and aggression, as well as genetic conditions such as liver and heart diseases, autoimmune disorders, and seizures.


 AKC registration does not guarantee proper breeding conditions, health, quality or claims to lineage. AKC staff do not visit all breeders and facilities; instead, registration is done primarily through mailed forms.





You next question may be why should I care? Well, I always felt its our responsibility to educate ourselves on the unknown. I bought 2 Miniature Pinscher in December of 2008 only to realize that my dogs were from a Puppy Mill. Although I loved them dearly, I never knew that such a thing existed and I still payed around $800 for both animals. Both of my dogs had papers and were registered through the AKC, but they had different health issues and were EXTREMELY hard to train. I can't attribute all of this to upbringing, but it does make a person think. 


While searching online, I did find the link to a woman who is a reputable breeder to the Min Pin breed. Her name is Kristin and she actually had a 28 question questionnaire that you must complete before she will even consider allowing you to purchase a dog. She makes you sign a contract and she has hundreds of pictures of the animals she has bred and letters from the families she has provided puppies to. I was actually impressed with her because her animals were happy and had so much land to roam free on. She loves her pets and even requests that you give her updates on the puppies you buy. Kristin is a vet tech herself and is definitely a REPUTABLE BREEDER. Her site is listed below:

Dogs from Reputable Breeders tend to be more expensive but this will ensure that you appreciate the pet you're receiving, value their health, and it assures that a person has a fair chance at loving their pet without huge health concerns in the future. They are also more trust worthy with children and have been mentally/physically loved from birth.





To sum it all up, No, I'm not a Animal's Rights Activist and No, I'm not someone who picks up lost dogs on the side of the street to bring them home. But I'll tell you what I'm Not - I'm NOT a person who will support the livelihood of exploiting animals and I'm NOT someone that will not spread my knowledge about  something that is so Sad. Please adopt a pet from a Humane Society or save your money and buy from a Reputable Breeder. In the end its worth the cost and you help our society as a whole. You can find these breeders on the AKC and CKC websites. Do your best to avoid newspapers, craigslist, and any other site where people look to make a quick buck..

Luck's Thoughts on the Michelle Obama Controversy..

Okay Okay... I've had some time to read several news articles on the Michelle Obama controversy regarding her trip to Spain, and I'm ready to give my thoughts on the issues...

I personally feel that the itemization of Michelle's trip is very PETTY. Granted the trip was pretty expensive, anything the President and his Family does will cost more than a person would expect. 

The thing that gets me is the fact that certain people feel it's their RIGHT to know what is being spent and on what. Be Realistic, do you really think that this trip is the most expensive thing the Presidential family has done thus far?

I keep hearing people talk about the taxpayer's money, the taxpayers money.. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ... We've been spending money on presidential trips for decades
 (despite it being on a business level or not)

How many trips do you think Laura Bush went on without the country's knowledge or scrutiny?

Why is that we choose to have issues over money we as citizens of the U.S would've never seen anyway. Would the money have went into your pocket anyway? No. But taking the taxpayer's money and funding the war is legitimate spending? Hilarious

I don't try to get into politics but these are just my thoughts.. I don't feel its right to judge her or call her "out-of-touch" simply because the media has decided that her trip would be an interesting story. The facts are that she is the first lady and any endeavor she takes on (whether personal or business) will be costly in some aspect. People out there are just MAD because Obama was elected for President and they must find something wrong with the way he operates in office or with his choices. Whether it be an appearance on The View or how he handled the Oil Spill, any issue that a "non-supporter" can bring to light in order to bash his judgement is done at all cost.

Now everyone wants to talk about the first families image for America. GET A LIFE. Be your own Image for America. There wouldn't be anything to say about Michelle or the first family if someone wasn't digging for something to talk about in the first place. At the end of the day this Family is still a Family. They go on vacations, buy pets, buy clothes, just like any other family living in the U.S. The only difference is that they are now forced to account for every nickel and dime spent; They must have security and their life stays under a microscope. Please Focus on something of some Importance in your own Life. No one has mentioned the fact that the President attempted to drop his earnings from $400,000 to $100,000 but the Constitution didn't allow him to take the pay cut. This was instance of him leading by example. So Before you form an opinion, THINK about the situation with an open mind. 

Would you not go on any trips if you were the first lady? 

This Family does not owe anyone a explanation and they are doing their best to fix the current state of the economy. Get a CLUE!

Sooo, these are just some of my thoughts on what I feel "Love" really is...


I've been in a good amount of relationships and I've come to the understanding that "Love" is a Perception..


I say this because it seems that I have a large amount of people I know who get into commitment with others who are OBVIOUSLY not in the relationship for the same thing, but yet they still find themselves smitten and "In Love"


This Brought me to the question of how can a person be so devout and have so much loyalty to an individual who doesn't value their opinions, want, needs, and requirements while in a relationship? Is it because they are feeling something that isn't actually there or is that they desire "Love" so badly that they settle for the opposite?


Whatever the case is, the situation must seem like "Love", which is their Perception..


I see so many stories in the media where woman find men who go on to later abuse them and/or their kids. It makes me wonder what type of "Love" they have for that individual to where they can't stand up for themselves. Of course, there are those people who where abused as kids and have situation that may "impair" their judgement.. But then again, they still define their feelings for their abuser as "Love"


That saddest part about this deadly Perception is that a person can get so caught up in what they feel is "Love" , that they forget the Real "Love" that lives within them. I'm not here to judge anyone but I do think that all of us should take a moment think about what "Love" really means to us. Although we may think a person is best thing for us at a particular time in our lives, we should take the time to look at the bigger picture. 


"Love" doesn't leave you and come and go as the feel; Love doesn't beat you or abuse your kids; Love doesn't demean you and make you feel less than you really are; Love doesn't build doubt in your mind about who you are and what you can do in life; Love doesn't Hate; Love doesn't Lie; Love Doesn't Hold Grudges;Love is Patient; Love is Kind; Love shows Compassion; Love Listens; Love doesn't tear things down....... And Lastly - "Love" should be your BEST Perception...

We All must learn to"Love" and value who we are and the light that makes us Unique. If we Never SEE this Light, We'll never have a adequate assessment to define our Perception of Love..
